English language teaching (ELT) in Japanese colleges seems to be in the midst of a paradigm shift from teaching-centeredness to learning-centeredness. College teachers, who are often seen as “authority figures of knowledge,” are likely to be expected to develop a new approach to ELT in which knowledge is jointly constructed by students and teachers in learning-centered classrooms. Innovation in ELT will require teachers to engage in collaborative and reflective teaching practice, which involves the complex application of theory and research as well as considerable teacher training and development. Continuous refinement of technical knowledge, pedagogical skills, interpersonal skills, and personal qualities will also be needed. Good teaching must be based on understanding how students learn and how we can help them develop autonomy in language learning, but autonomy may be interpreted differently in different cultures or contexts. This conference will be an important opportunity for participants to share their own theories, practices, and research in a variety of ELT contexts inside and outside Japan, and to help tomorrow’s learners and teachers to promote their autonomous development more effectively.
我が国の大学英語教育において、「教え中心」から「学び中心」へのパラダイム・シフトが進行しつつあるように感じられる。しばしば「知識の権威者」と見受けられる大学教師は、「学び中心」のクラスで学生と共に知識を構築する新しいアプローチの開発を期待されるであろう。英語教育の革新のために、教師は協働的・省察的授業実践に取り組むことを要するが、これには、相当な研修・職能成長と同様に理論・リサーチの統合的な応用を心がけることが含まれる。専門的知識、教育学的スキル、人間関係スキル、個人的特性もたえず磨かなければならない。優れた教えは、言語学習者がどのようにして学ぶか、教師はどうすれば学習者オートノミーの育成を助けることができるか、に対する確かな理解に基づく。ただし、文化や教育的コンテクストが異なれば、オートノミーの解釈も異なると思われる。本大会は、参加者同士で国内外の多様な教育現場における理論・実践・リサーチを共有し合い、明日の学習者・教師が自律的成長をより効果的に育むことができるように支援するうえで、大いに意義ある機会となるであろう。
